Asbestos Surveys UK
Prior to the year 2000 asbestos-containing materials were widely used for a range of construction purposes, leaving many buildings in Britain and Northern Ireland that still contain asbestos.
If asbestos materials are in good condition and undisturbed, it poses no immediate threat, however if the condition has degraded or it is disturbed asbestos fibres can be released into the air, which if inhaled, can cause several serious lung diseases, including mesothelioma. The potential for the material to become a risk must be measured, and as such, managed.
To prevent materials becoming inadvertently disturbed, surveys must be carried out to identify asbestos containing materials, measure their extent and any damage which may be present in order to complete an understanding of how these asbestos risks may affect persons working in and around the environment they are located. Through the utilisation of risk assessments which firstly look at the individual risk of the material, but also at how materials can affect building users, persons with the duty to manage any asbestos in buildings can start to build a management plan of these items.
